Meshuggah stands as one of the most influential and innovative bands in modern metal.
Meshuggah has been innovating the genre of metal since 1987, and in that time, they
have managed to change their sound into something that is completely unique and
inspiring. “Nothing” represents a pinnacle of Meshuggah’s career, showcasing their
mastery of complex rhythms, dissonant harmonies, and atmospheric textures.
Meshuggah is not only Djent, but they invented it, yep, I said it. This album continues to
inspire Djenty hopefuls adding absurd amounts of strings to their guitars until they are
too big to play standing up.
“Nothing” invites listeners on a journey deep into the recesses of the human psyche,
exploring themes of existentialism, nihilism, and the search for meaning in a world
devoid of certainty.
From the opening deluge of “Stengah” it’s abundantly clear that Meshuggah is
operating on a level few bands dare to tread. The dizzying, crunchy polyrhythms,
dissonant riffs. Percussion meister Tomas Haake’s precise execution, anchors the
complex rhythms that create a sonic maelstrom that engulfs the listener, making them
wonder “where are you taking me?” Using down-tuned 7 strings to emulate the sound of
the eight-string guitar they couldn’t yet perfect. Still, this technique created a most
unique sound emulated by many bands today. The lyrical content compliments the
cinematic complexities of this track.
Tracks like “Rational” and “Perpetual Black Second” showcase Meshuggah’s
mastery of tension and release, with hypnotic grooves giving way to explosive bursts of
aggression. It feels like you’re being chased through a maze by a giant robot arachnid.
Again, with the unique guitar tones layered with Jens Kidman’s guttural vocals add an
extra layer of intensity, providing a primal counterpoint to the band’s cerebral musicality.
But amidst all the chaos, there’s a strange beauty to be found in Meshuggah’s
madness. Tracks like “Closed Eye Visuals” and “Organic Shadows” offer moments of
introspection and reflection, like finding a hidden oasis in the middle of a desert of
distortion.
What truly sets Nothing apart, however, is Meshuggah’s relentless pursuit of
innovation. The band’s willingness to eschew traditional song structures and embrace.

The avant-garde is evident in every track, from the hypnotic grooves of “Glints Collide” to
the angular rhythms of “Straws Pulled at Random” The tour de force of technical
prowess and sonic experimentation, showcasing Meshuggah’s ability to push the
boundaries of metal music while maintaining a sense of cohesion and purpose.
Closing out the album is “Spasm” a relentless barrage of pummeling drums and
churning riffs that leaves a lasting impression. The track’s frenetic energy and
unrelenting intensity serve as a fitting conclusion to Meshuggah’s sonic odyssey.
In conclusion, “Nothing” is a masterpiece of extreme metal, a towering achievement that
defies categorization and continues to inspire generations of musicians and listeners
alike. With its uncompromising intensity, innovative churning groove, technical precision,
and fearless innovation, Meshuggah’s magnum opus remains a seminal work in the
annals of heavy music, a testament to the power of creativity and the boundless
possibilities of the human imagination.
